Noun Full Form An action query that changes a set of records according to criteria you specify. An update query does not return any records.

Your update queries contain select criteria (the equivalent of a search string) and update criteria (the equivalent of a replacement string). The query finds all records that match your select criteria, and then writes your update criteria to those records, all in one pass.
